Misery (LOL)

I really enjoyed Thursday’s class, when we watched the misery trailer I thought that was a lot of fun. The remake made me laugh and I immediately showed it to my boyfriend when I got home. He is a Stephen king junkie and laughed when he saw the remake trailer. The inanimate Alice I really did not understand I guess would be a way of putting it. It was interesting but odd and I thought at any minute something was going to jump out or something like that and scare the crap out of me in front of the whole class.

another day no one to tutor.

When I went to the tutoring center on Wednesday I was surprised to find out that no one was going to come in again. I hope that soon the center will pick up more business because I do feel like it’s a waste of time to sit there with no one to help. Not to mention it does get fairly boring. My partner and I decided to go over our Icon papers we worked on opening paragraphs transition sentences among other things. My partners topic was the Disney logo I thought that was really cool because even at eighteen I still love to have Disney movie marathons with my friends and boyfriend.

the week

Today we went over our cultural icon essays. I needed some help with my opening paragraph and my partners provided me with some very help full hints on how to start my paper, I was having some difficulty with this so I was very grateful for their help, I am finding it difficult writing about this particular topic I feel that I am out of my element and that my paper seems awkward. Hopefully it will all turn put alright because I really do want a good grade on this paper.

Tutoring

Today I went to the writing center to tutor but no students ever showed up. So my partner and I worked on the project. We decided to add to the homophones page that was already in there because we thought of a few that were very commonly mixed up. After working on the project for a good half hour we could no longer think of anything else to put down. We decided to do our bloggs and see if we could find anything to add to our delicious accounts. All in all our day in the writing center was very productive I just hope next time we will actually have someone to tutor.

tutoring

So unlike everyone in my class I did not get to start tutoring last week due to being out for a week ill. However I do get to have my first tutoring session on Wednesday, I do hope that everything goes well. When I observed I noticed different techniques in tutoring some I found more efficient than others, so my biggest concern is that the way I tutor will actually be helpful to the student and not destructive. Also something I found funny is that I met my tutoring partner for the first time on Thursday I somewhat feel bad because I never remember seeing him before. But he does seem very nice and I am sure our personalities will click just fine.

class

Last week in class we went over how advertisers try to appeal to the public. We went over how they can appeal to them emotionally. Like with the under armor commercial they were trying to connect that people have the power to change their lives. Another way they try to appeal to the public is socially one commercial that did that was the life water commercial, not only did they have thriller a very popular song in its day but also some model or whatever that is popular now. The final one is politically now I am still a little confused on how that one works but I am sure I will figure it out sooner or later. I finally got to set up my tutoring day with my partner and I hope that tutoring will be enjoyable and not as difficult for me as I think it is going to be.

readings

This week we had to read chapters one, two and three in Cultural theory and popular culture. In the readings assigned for this week the chapters went over popular culture, culture in civilizations and culturalism. In chapter one it defined culture and went on to explain that understanding ideology is a big part in understanding culture. Chapter one will come to be useful when I have to write my paper on culture. In chapter two it went over culture and civilization. It discussed the post-war debate and cultures of other people. Chapter three went over the uses of literacy. I learned through the readings about Raymond Williams and his enormous effect cultural studies. Apparently he has assisted in understanding cultural theory among other things. To be honest I do not find this book very useful and when reading it I become very frustrated.

tutoring

Today I went to the writing center to observe a session. The girl that came in had an anthropology paper she had to write. The girl was concerned with the flow of the paper and asked the tutor to go over it with her. After the tutor introduced herself they got started on the paper. Now while the tutor was reading the paper she keep making changes for the girl and writing in revisions. I remember being told not to do that. I think with this particular tutoring session I had examples of what not to do rather than how to do a session. The tutor was very polite and helpful. I also noticed the tutee was very shy and when asked questions she would wait to see what the tutor told her were correct. The only thing that was uncomfortable was the temperature in the writing center I do find it hard to concentrate. All in all I learned several things today.
